CANS Assessor - Texas Child-Centered Care System (T3C)
The CANS Assessor plays a vital role in the assessment and care
planning for children within the Texas Child-Centered Care System
(T3C). This position involves conducting CANS (Child and Adolescent
Needs and Strengths) assessments, facilitating the accurate
recording of data, providing guidance to staff, and enhancing the
placement process to ensure child-centered, person-focused care.

Key Responsibilities
- Assessment and Interviewing: Conduct CANS assessment interviews
in diverse settings (child's home, community, or via telehealth)
and arrange interpreter services if necessary.
- Research and Recommendations: Stay updated on CANS assessment
research and offer process improvement suggestions for T3C,
coordinating with third-party contractors for effective
implementation.
- Documentation: Record case activities, enter assessment data
into the eCANS application, and document recommendations in the
DFPS IMPACT system.
- Communication and Liaison: Share assessment results with the
placement team, offer guidance to staff, and resolve disputes
regarding assessment findings and recommendations.
- Educational Support: Develop and provide job aids and training
materials to improve staff understanding of CANS assessments and
the placement process.
- Policy and Compliance: Serve as the subject matter expert on
CANS assessments and the T3C system, interpreting and ensuring
compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
- Continuous Improvement: Participate in CQI (Continuous Quality
Improvement) initiatives to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness
of the CANS assessment process.
- Monitoring and Oversight: Track assessment timelines for
children, youth, and young adults, ensuring timely completion.
- Client Rights and Safety: Ensure compliance with safety
standards and protection of client rights.Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field
from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: Minimum of two years of consultative, social
service, or technical experience. Preferred experience with the CPS
Program, CANS assessments, and person-centered care.
- Skills: Proficient with Word, Excel, and database software.
Strong analytical, presentation, and interpersonal communication
skills.
- Certification: Must complete Texas CANS Child Welfare
certification as part of the training and maintain it
annually.
- Age Requirement: Must be at least 21 years old.
- Clearances: Must pass a drug screen, MVR, Criminal History and
DFPS Background Check, Texas Health and Human Services Eligibility,
FBI Fingerprint Check, and any other required background checks.Key
Skills
- Communication and Presentation: Ability to present technical
information effectively, respond to inquiries, and craft materials
for internal and external audiences.
- Analytical Ability: Proficient in problem-solving, data
analysis, and making data-driven conclusions for policy and process
recommendations.
- Financial Literacy: Competent in interpreting budgets and
financial documents.
- Physical Requirements: Able to lift 10-25 pounds occasionally
and meet vision requirements for close, distance, and adjusted
focus vision.
- Work Environment: Primarily indoors with occasional exposure to
outdoor weather. Standard office noise level.Principal
